“You what!” my mother screamed, slamming the fridge door and jerking around to face me. “Cristiana, please tell me you’re joking.”

I shook my head. “No, Mama. I’m not.”

She threw her arms into the air, muttering obscenities in Spanish. “Mija, why would you do that? Luiz was the perfect man to be your husband.”

“But I didn’t love him, Mama! I don’t want to marry someone I don’t love.”

She shook her head, arms still waving through the air like a maniac. “Dios mio, child. There’s more to a marriage than love. I don’t know what’s gotten into you lately. You’re staying out every night, all hours of the night. I never see you, and when I do, you’re rushing off again. Your behavior lately has been a total 180.”

And she continued to lecture me for the remainder of my time before work. Finally, I had the excuse to leave, because even she wouldn’t stop me from getting a paycheck.

The entire shift, I couldn’t stop thinking about how shitty my mother had been. Gabby and Fernanda were right—it was my life. Not hers! She had no right to be angry with me for not marrying a man I don’t love. It was ridiculous! Just because we’d struggled with money, it didn’t mean that I should choose that over love.

Maxim’s words about selling my soul rang through my mind, and it solidified my resolve that I’d done the right thing.

Yeah, I said I’d meet Maxim after work, but I was still too stressed out to be around anyone. So, I changed into my swimsuit, and headed to the pool.

The cool water prickled my skin, leaving a pattern of goosebumps that riddled my arms and legs. But after a moment, the water felt amazing, and I swam through with nothing on my mind but the cool air against my damp skin when I breached the surface.

Glancing up, I saw Maxim approaching the pool.

“I thought I might find you out here,” he said, that charming smirk of his melting my heart like butter.

“It’s been a rough day.”

“Mind if I join you?” he asked, kicking off his shoes.
